Fun, Quick, Easy Painted "Antiques" Sign Tutorial

Okay, this is not a fancy painted sign project.
But it is easy.
And I wanted to make a sign to get shoppers attention at upcoming flea markets and yard sale days.
Tell me.... just how quick could you go from 60 to stop when you see this sign?
Lol... maybe we should keep that to ourselves.

Best thing of all... free.
Zip...nada...

In  all it took me an hour, most of that was dry times.
 1. Steal some wood from your husbands scraps.
Or be like me and have your own pile of boards hoarded in the basement.
And kind of wood, free is best.
 2. Paint with craft paint... leftover paint from your living room.
Steal from your kids craft box... whatever.
3. Let dry... good time to check whats on Facebook.
 4. Find a small tip brush and free hand your letters.
Practice on last nights pizza box or your kids cereal boxes.
They just love to reach into the cabinet and see mom has been drawing on them.
But it is a good solid surface to get the feel of your letters.
And it's fun to make them wonder about you.
 5. Once the letters are dry.... line them with a gold marker.
Or not... I just wanted dimension.
Notice, I am not always perfect here... it is suppose to look old.
Yeah, lets go with that.
 6.  Now is the fun part... get a paper towel and dab a tiny bit of a new color on it and RUB!
Streak... smear... lightly add some here and there.
I used a lighter tan and dark brown.
 7.  Make sure to do this to the sides too.
Let dry... check back in on Facebook.
 8.  Now, this is the fun step... sand it like crazy.
I just had cheap sandpaper.
Used my fingers... nothing fancy.
Scared Miley my dog to death.
{Work out your aggression.}
What fun... it will tone it down a bit.
See... no more bright letters.
 9.  My last step is my trade secret.
Okay, I have told my readers before.
But I seal everything I paint like this with brown shoe polish.
Yep, just plain ole dark wax shoe polish.
 10.  But it brings the glow back and makes it feel nice to the touch.
I have done this with furniture too.
Try it on a small corner... but I think you will like it.
So here is my sign...
Don't know if I will hang it or what.
For now I will just look forward to the next Yard Sale!
Come one... come all!

Oh one last thing.
This was on TV the other day.
The Frontier Alaska show I love...

"Spring has Sprung...
Fall has Fell...
It's Winter now...
And cold as H#ll!"

Yep, sounds right to me.

More Rusty, Crusty, Patina'd GOODNESS in my Country Kitchen...

Hi there my dears...
It's one of those days...
Those "I have to do something.." day.
Nervous energy... Winter Humm-Drumms?
Okay, this is normal for me...
But I am fiddling again with the kitchen.
Taking down Christmas is always a bit rough.
Everything is out of whack.
A little off... or plain. Or something.
I am the queen of collecting "smalls".
Little trinkets of vintage goodness...
But even for me, this is a bit much.
It is a throw everything up there and it will look interesting moments.
I love the pottery, but it is a bit.... much.
So here is my after... Look----Symmetry!!
Wow, that is a good thing folks.
I have to admit, this was kind of an accident.
I drug these antique oil and gas cans up from the basement to post on a site to sell today.
And then I took a good look at them and decided they were keepers.
Well for a bit longer...
But I love the way they add more metal to the wide view into the kitchen.
I have quite the collection going friends...
But that is part of the fun...
I try to switch things out and not have everything "good" kept in boxes.
Not that I have much invested... most of this is yard sale loot.
Darling huh?
This is a reproduction, but still so sweet.
I kind of have a stitched signs theme going as well.
But I love them... and may make a few this winter.... It's on my to-do list.
Almost all of these metal goodies use to be on the front porch with it was more country themed.
I brought them inside so they were not damaged by more rust.
Now I have plants in some, but most are just display.
This water jug is probably my favorite.
Yes, I still have a tree up... but it is just country stuff.
I love the soft white lights in the wintertime... who am I kidding.. All YEAR!
And of course... it sets in another metal tub... with burlap!
All this vignette is on my old buggy seat...
I will pull it out one days and show you the decal on the back.
It is wonderful.
But a toe breaker... many a fit from my husband when he hits it in the dark.
It sticks out... but I love it.
This is my too bright kitchen light.
When they are all on it is blinding.
I have many ideas on what to replace it with.
Trying to sell my husband on a rusty vintage shade I found a few years ago.
He has not gave in yet...  ;)
And finally, my old highchair.
No, my kids did not use it, nor was it mine as a child.
My kids had an ugly plastic one.
But I saw this unloaded at a thrift show and traded some of my jewelry for it.
DEAL!
I love it... and it mostly holds plants...
but someday... in the very...very...very distant future....
One last thing... a reader wanted to see the clock close up... it is so cute.
Do you even remember what we started out talking about?
Oh yeah... I hope you like my gas cans in the kitchen...
I will show your comments about how you love it to my husband...
As he looks at me like... "You think those are PRETTY?"
Yes, yes I do...

Love to all....Brooke

A Warm, Welcoming Front Entry...

Emphasis on the warm part!

Welcome to our country home...
Today I am sharing an area that I'm not sure I have ever shown you.
At least this much...
Our stairs and front entry area.
Our house makes a big figure eight...
So this room is by my office/dining room.
And the living room is the other direction.
The second story is our loft.
I am using it as a craft and sewing room recently.
I will share that with you soon!
I love our spindles... they are Amish made.
It was hard to pick out a style.
But I am glad we went classic and they are SOLID!
Really well made.
So lets take a closer look at my tabletop.
These candlesticks are one of my favorites.
I added some burlap ribbon the the candles and a tassel.
The lamp need some height... so it is now on a wood cigar box.
My mom made the doily years ago.
Burlap is my thing lately... so I made some burlap roses to enjoy.
The lace and the burlap give it a more casual feel now.
It can easily be too formal.
So I am adding more vintage as I can.
This photo inspired it all.
I had been looking for the right place to display it.
It is so precious.
The dresser has been in almost every room.
But I love it here.
It can get lost in busy areas.
Here you can enjoy its lovely arched legs and simple style.
It is very old, very well built.
The entry is always home to houseplants.
I love these planters.
They have such pretty designs.
Don't mind the dust!
My camera is really good at finding dirt....lol.
This big guy was a gift from a garden friend.
It looked pretty rough this fall, but it is getting new growth and looks happy.
I am lucky to have lots of natural light for plants.
And this area is good with the tile in case of spills.
I wish they are were real... but it would be a chore watering the ledges!
I am always amazed how some people either love or hate wallpaper.
This spot of red was just what I wanted for the entry.
The rug was one from our previous home.
I am just lucky it matches so well.
Thanks so much for stopping by today!
And of course this post would never have been possible without my helper!
