Hello Gardening Friends!

Today I was so happy to get my new seeds in the mail from Renee Shepherd of Renee’s Garden.  I am now a test garden for Renee, and she has such wonderful heirloom seeds, I wanted to show you what I chose.  Many of these varieties are exclusive to her site.   The packaging is so beautiful, and include very good planting information too.

Here is some of the things I will be growing this year….

Snapdragon Chantilly

Butterfly Snapdragon “Chantilly”

Plump, open-faced, fluted flowers closely spaced along tall graceful spikes -- a lovely candelabra of bloom. Our watercolor blend of creamy yellow, soft salmon, apricot-bronze, and candy -floss pink.

Cosmos Double Bon Bon

Cosmos Double “Rose Bon Bon”

Extra fancy, uniformly double blossoms packed with frilled petals in a rich romantic rose. This exceptionally beautiful and care-free new cosmos produces 3 inch flowers that bloom non-stop on long stems.

Alyssum Summer Peaches

Alyssum, "Summer Peaches"

New alyssum from skilled Dutch breeders. Honey-scented blossom clusters form a ground-covering pastel tapestry in soft peachy tones. Easy to grow, fast to bloom.

Foxglove Farie Queen

Foxglove, "Apricot Faerie Queen"  Biennial

- elegant cottage garden favorites for light shade. The tall graceful spires are draped with elongated bells in a new creamy soft apricot shade with delicately speckled throats.

Perfume Delight Sweet Peas

Sweet Peas, Antique, "Perfume Delight"

Heat-tolerant antique sweet pea blend of heirloom varieties, with an intense honey-orange fragrance, in a rich collage of vibrant single colors and bicolors.

French Larkspur Parisian Pink

Larkspur, "Parisian Pink"

Florist-quality Larkspur from our favorite French supplier. Branching 3 to 5 ft. tall spires packed with rose-pink double blossoms with just a hint of salmon.

Salvia Marble Arch

Salvia, "Marble Arch"

Unusual ornamental whose upper floral bracts display gorgeous flags of color in intense indigo-blue, rich rose and pure white. Improved, long-blooming Dutch selection.

Hollyhocks Apricot Peach Parfiat

Hollyhock, "Apricot-Peach Parfait"

Beautiful new double hollyhocks in luscious
colors. Sturdy tall 5 to 7 foot stalks are packed with powder
puff blossoms that unfurl in delicious shades of apricot and
rosy-peach.

Sweet Peas Saltwater Taffy Swirls

Sweet Peas, Scented, "Saltwater Taffy Swirls"

Very special long-stemmed "flake" varieties with big ruffled, fragrant flowers in soft pastel candy colors, swirled and sprinkled with deeper markings.

They are all so beautiful.  Thanks so much to Renee and others like her for keeping gardeners like me in mind…. who love old fashioned varieties…. which are very hard to find, especially the richly scented ones.  I am just so excited to see them in my own garden!

Grow

I am part of her “Seed Grow Project”  which will be so much fun…. basically I will be a test garden for new varieties…. what fun!  For that we will be growing a new nasturtium….

Nasturtium, Climbing, "Spitfire"

Nasturtium, Climbing, "Spitfire" by reneesgarden.

Exclusive - Brilliant, scarlet-orange blossoms shine out amongst trailing green foliage, attracting hovering hummingbirds. Train up short trellises or tripods for a cascade of bright blossoms.

I can’t wait!!!  Thanks for visiting and Happy Gardening…..Brooke

It rained all weekend, but it was worth it….

There were some incredible displays….

IMG_4889

…..and loads of themed gardens, which my girls really enjoyed….

IMG_4892

My favorite was the water features…..

IMG_4860

And anything with a fireplace….. wow…..

IMG_4893

They had tons of spring bulbs…. which I am patiently waiting for here at home…..

IMG_4894

And a big theme was “found art”…. which was so nice to see.

IMG_4900

This was a simple idea, but I just loved these…..

IMG_4895

It was just great to see so many ideas…..

Garden Club Trip….Hilltop Orchids

IMG_4805

Oh my do I have a feast for the eyes today!

IMG_4782

Today our garden club visited Hilltop Orchids owned by Dick and Sandy Wells in Cloverdale, Indiana.

IMG_4783

We were honored to be given a tour by Dick Wells, who is a legend in the Orchid field. IMG_4818

He told us today that he has bred over 150 orchid varieties…. many named after his family members and friends.

IMG_4823

I really must say I was not very knowledgeable about these plants, but he was so informative…. he makes it all look easy.

IMG_4784

And look at all the lovely plants he has in bloom!

IMG_4785

I think he said he had over 60,000 orchids, most were in bloom during out visit.

IMG_4786

There was just dazzling color everywhere you looked.

IMG_4787

Such beauty for us “Spring Hungry” Indiana Gardeners!

IMG_4792

The colors were so vivid.

IMG_4793

Of course I am always drawn to the pinks….

IMG_4795

Each one more fantastic than the last.

IMG_4796

There were just so many to choose from, it was mind blowing.

IMG_4801

He let us tour the entire greenhouse, and get close and touch the blooms.

IMG_4802

I was almost afraid too, they were too beautiful…. and delicate.

IMG_4803

I am sorry, I do not know all the names, there were far too many to keep track.

IMG_4804

We stayed there for over two hours enjoying the over a quarter an acre of greenhouses.

IMG_4807

We also got to see his breeding building, a sterile environment like a chemistry lab.

IMG_4808

This bunch were getting ready to be shipped out.

IMG_4809

But I must say if you are ever near I70, in Cloverdale, Indiana…..

IMG_4812

Especially in December thru Early Spring when they have the best blooms……

IMG_4814

Stop in and visit with Dick at Hilltop Orchids.

IMG_4826

To me it really did feel like a once in a lifetime experience.

Montclair

And yes, I did bring one home…. it is called a “Montclair”. Mine is not in bloom yet, but it looks like the one above. The reason I chose it is because it has a very spicy scent. I think it is much prettier in person, but this photo is from his website….here is more about the plant.

Sorry it is such a long post today, but how could I leave out such lovely pictures!

I couldn’t decide what ones to not use, so I used them all!

This is a video from where I was today….. cool huh?

Happy Gardening……Brooke

And thank you Dick for a very nice visit today!!
